The government is continuously striving to increase farmers' income. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), farmers receive subsidies of up to 60% for fish farming. The scheme aims to promote fish farming in Bihar by connecting farmers to fisheries through PMMSY. A substantial budget of ₹20,000 crore has been allocated to support fish farming under this scheme.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana 2024 via video conferencing, with the Governor of Bihar, the Chief Minister, and the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying in attendance. This scheme allocates ₹12,340 crore to marine, inland fisheries, and aquaculture.
According to Fisheries Development Officer Chitranjan Kumar, the application process is straightforward. The government has specifically initiated the PMMSY for fishermen to boost the fisheries sector. Under this scheme, SC/ST and women are eligible for a 60% subsidy on unit costs, while other categories receive 40%. The scheme aims to increase fish production to approximately 7 million tonnes by 2024-25 and double the income of fishermen and farmers.
The main objective of the Matsya Sampada Yojana is to streamline and enhance the journey of agricultural products from farms to markets. This involves increasing GDP, generating more jobs, encouraging investments, and ensuring farmers receive better prices for their produce, ultimately doubling their income. The scheme promotes sustainable use of fish resources, beneficial for the environment, society, and economy. By using better techniques to care for land and water, fish production and efficiency can be significantly improved.
