Protect mango plants without chemicals, know the best organic solutions

Protect mango plants
Protect mango plants

Leafhoppers (Mango Hoppers) damage mango plants by sucking sap and spreading viruses. Adopting biological control methods is the safest and most effective way to prevent infestations. Spraying garlic and neem oil or implementing mixed cropping can protect plants naturally. These methods are environmentally friendly and help preserve beneficial insects.

How Do Leafhoppers Cause Damage?

Both nymphs and adult leafhoppers suck sap from mango leaves, flowers, tender shoots, and small fruits. They secrete a sticky substance called honeydew, which leads to the formation of sooty mold. This mold disrupts photosynthesis, affecting plant growth. Additionally, leafhoppers can act as virus carriers, reducing the quality and yield of the crop.

The Risk of Chemical Insecticides:

Excessive use of chemical insecticides can harm the environment and biodiversity. Therefore, adopting organic and natural control measures is more beneficial.

Identifying Leafhoppers: Leafhopper eggs are laid on the soft tissues of leaves and hatch within ten days. The nymphs are small, yellow-green, wingless, and remain active on the underside of leaves. The adult insects are wedge-shaped, brown in color, and capable of flying and jumping quickly.

Chemical-Free Leafhopper Management:

Spraying Garlic Extract (Oil): Garlic has natural insecticidal properties that effectively control sap-sucking pests. To prepare: Finely chop 100 grams of garlic and soak it in ½ liter of mineral oil for 24 hours. Add 10 milliliters of liquid soap. Dilute the mixture in 10 liters of water, strain, and stir well before spraying. This method does not harm beneficial insects.

Spraying Neem Oil: Neem oil has insecticidal properties that effectively control leafhoppers, flea beetles, and gall midges. To prepare Mix 30 milliliters of neem oil in 1 liter of lukewarm water. Add 5 milliliters of liquid soap and stir to make a solution. Shake well before spraying. This keeps pests away while being suitable for organic farming.

Adopting Mixed Cropping System: Planting marigold, basil, and ginger alongside mango crops reduces the incidence of leafhoppers. A diverse cropping system helps minimize pest infestations naturally.
