This year, the state has set a target to cultivate Rabi crops across 1.4 million hectares during the Rabi season of 2024-25. Last year, Rabi crops were sown over 1.42 million hectares. However, with October halfway through, the harvesting of Kharif crops are still incomplete, which is causing delays in the sowing of Rabi crops.
The Agriculture Department has indicated that the highest sowing targets for Rabi crops are set for the Jabalpur division, while the lowest are for the Shahdol division. According to the department, the goal for this year's Rabi season is to cover 1.4 million hectares. Among these, the major crop, wheat, is expected to be sown over 918,500 hectares, compared to 977,000 hectares last year.
Additionally, under pulse crops, chickpeas will be sown on 205,100 hectares, lentils on 79,200 hectares, and peas on 26,600 hectares. For oilseed crops, mustard will be sown on 146,000 hectares, and flax on 10,700 hectares. This year, the area for mustard cultivation has increased by approximately 55,000 hectares compared to last year. Meanwhile, under food grain crops, barley will be sown on 36,000 hectares, which is a decrease from last year's 49,000 hectares.
Thanks to the efforts of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the allocation of DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) has increased from 600,000 to 800,000 metric tons. Other fertilizers allocated for the season include approximately 2.4 million metric tons of urea, 600,000 metric tons of NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium), 650,000 metric tons of SSP (Single Super Phosphate), and 100,000 metric tons of MOP (Potash). Last year's total fertilizer sales reached 3.5 million metric tons.
At the divisional level, the highest sowing target is set for the Jabalpur division at approximately 204,900 hectares, while the Shahdol division has the lowest target at 29,300 hectares.
