IMD Update: Rain and Thunderstorm Forecast Across India on 10 June 2024

New Delhi, June 18 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting rain and thunderstorms in various parts of the country on June 19. This weather pattern is attributed to a Western Disturbance located in the mid-tropospheric westerlies along longitude 67°E and latitude 30°N. The disturbance is expected to bring isolated to scattered light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh Weather, and Rajasthan from June 18 to June 20.

Additionally, strong surface winds with speeds of 25-35 kmph are forecasted over the plains of Northwest India for the next five days.

Central and Eastern India Weather Update:

Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh: These regions are likely to experience light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) over the next five days.
Odisha: Heavy rainfall is anticipated at isolated places from June 20 to June 22, 2024.
Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha: Light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected on June 18, with an increase in rainfall activity thereafter.

Alert for Heavy Rainfall in Northeastern and Eastern India:

Strong south-westerly and southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are impacting the northeastern states at lower tropospheric levels.

  1. Northeastern India: Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph), is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, and West Bengal for the next 5 days.
  2. Heavy Rainfall Warning: Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh from June 18 to June 22. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also likely to experience heavy rainfall from June 18 to 19, with extremely heavy rainfall expected in Assam, Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal on June 18-19.
