In 1991, when JRD Tata stepped down as Chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata was chosen as his successor. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally, acquiring significant companies such as Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus Steel. Over his 21-year tenure, the group's global presence grew exponentially, increasing its revenues 50-fold.

In 1991, the Tata Group earned $5-7 billion annually. By 2016, that figure had risen to an impressive $103 billion. The Tata Group now operates in 121 countries and provides employment to over 800,000 people. Tata Sons, the main investment holding company, directs its profits to Tata Trusts, which support religious, philanthropic, and orphanage causes.
