To address the shortage of proper accommodation for workers arriving in cities for various purposes, the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, has initiated the construction of rest houses (rain baseras). Under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana and National Urban Livelihood Mission, 121 shelter homes have already been established in major urban centers across the state. Additionally, model rest houses are being constructed in 16 municipal corporation areas. The government has sanctioned a budget of approximately INR 100 crore, with each model rest house receiving an allocation of INR 6.10 crore from the Labor Department.
December last year, Chief Minister Dr. Yadav interacted with several citizens who were spending their nights on the sidewalks of Bhopal. He also inspected the rest houses near Eidgah Hills and Shahjahani Park, accompanied by officials from the Urban Development and Housing Department. Following the inspection, the Chief Minister issued directives to provide essential facilities such as food, blankets, and medical services to the residents of these rest houses, particularly during the winter months.
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav acknowledged the challenges faced by workers and citizens living in temporary shelters due to inadequate facilities in cities like Bhopal, Indore, and other urban centers. In response, he directed the construction of dedicated rest houses to ensure suitable accommodation for workers. Plans for these rest houses in Bhopal, Sagar, Jabalpur, and Indore are already underway.
Each of the proposed rest houses will have a capacity of 100 beds. Construction will be carried out in cities such as Indore, Ujjain, Bhopal, Sagar, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Dewas, Ratlam, Rewa, Singrauli, Satna, Jabalpur, Katni, Morena, Chhindwara, and Gwalior. These rest houses will offer high-quality services, including free and subsidized meals, ensuring comfort and convenience for the residents. The construction will be overseen by the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), and the management of these rest houses will be handled by a committee chaired by the district collector, with operations carried out through the municipal corporation.
