The huge jump in tomato prices has faded the redness of tomatoes in Indian households. Talking about Indian cuisine, tomatoes, garlic, onions, and potatoes are common vegetables needed in every Indian dish. The retail prices of tomatoes, which were running at Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg in February-March, respectively increased from Rs 60 per kg to Rs 120-Rs 160 per kg, touching the sky high.

If the housewives are asked, skyrocketing tomato prices in Delhi, Bombay, Lucknow, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Jaipur have made tomatoes disappear from their kitchen and now tomato salad with seasonal cucumber is missing. The consumption of tomatoes, which are also used in dishes, is now negligible in middle-class homes.

The government took a new initiative:

The Indian government is also distracted by this price jump of tomatoes. The government has started a new initiative by a massive “Tomato Challenge Hackathon”, seeking its views from the general public on price control and its distribution system and the right price payable for agricultural produce through a digital hackathon competition related to Tomato. This contest (Department of Consumer Affairs or Ministry of Education) partner. It is commendable, but even today the inflation of tomatoes is coming in the way for the housewives in their vegetable purchases. Tomato prices do not seem to be giving respite for a possible week due to rains as well as problems arising out of other distribution systems.

Now a truck full of tomatoes was also looted:

It is also ironic that thieves and robbers have so far only gotten their hands on jewellery, new cars, motorcycles, or other quick cash-paying items. If news is to be believed, some people looted a tomato truck and ran away in Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka. The truck had about 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes, which is estimated to be worth Rs 3 lakh.

Who says that the redness of tomato only enhances the beauty of your dining table, now it has become an easy way to become a millionaire for some businessmen as well as a few selected people who earn water profits. The farmer is still helpless.
