In India, Bihar is the largest producer of makhana (fox nuts). 80 to 90 percent of the world's makhana production comes from Bihar. The Mithila makhana from Bihar has also received a GI (Geographical Indication) tag from the government. Makhana has gained recognition as a superfood both in India and abroad, so the government is focusing on its quality production. In this regard, the state government has launched a scheme called the Makhana Development Plan to promote makhana cultivation. Under this scheme, farmers receive subsidies ranging from 50 to 75 percent for makhana cultivation and seed production. Additionally, a Makhana Research Center has been established for this purpose. If farmers want to venture into something new in agriculture apart from traditional crops, makhana cultivation can prove to be a good option.
There are two varieties of makhana. To promote the production of high-quality makhana seeds in the state, this scheme is being implemented. The government will provide farmers with seeds of the new variety of makhana. It is worth mentioning that due to high-yielding varieties like Swarna Vaidehi and Sabour makhana-1, the productivity has increased from 16 tons per hectare to 28 tons per hectare in Bihar. Sabour makhana-1 and Swarna Vaidehi varieties are being promoted significantly.
Here's the funding breakdown: According to the state government, the cost of cultivating the advanced variety of makhana seeds per hectare is Rs. 97,000. Farmers are being provided with a subsidy of 75 percent on this. This amounts to a maximum of Rs. 72,750. Accordingly, the farmer will only have to bear Rs. 24,250 in expenses. This subsidy will be provided to farmers in eight districts, including Katihar, Darbhanga, Supaul, Kishanganj, Purnia, Saharsa, Araria, and West Champaran.
How to Apply: Farmers from the respective districts interested in availing the subsidy for makhana cultivation can apply online on the portal of the Horticulture Department of the relevant district. Interested farmers can apply for the subsidy by visiting horticulture.bihar.gov.in. Additionally, farmers can also apply through CSC. To avail the benefits of this scheme, farmers will need documents like Aadhaar card, bank passbook, agricultural land papers, mobile number, etc.
