The "New Special Variety" of wheat developed by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is set to be a boon for people suffering from diabetes. This recent research by the leading state agricultural university of Punjab, India, holds immense potential for millions of individuals affected by diabetes. The university's research team has developed a unique type of wheat that may help reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart-related diseases. Consuming bread made from this wheat variety will not lead to a rapid increase in glucose levels in the body.
In present times, diabetes has emerged as a significant problem in India and worldwide. Recent research has revealed that in India alone, there are over 1 million people suffering from diabetes, with over 1.3 million on the verge of becoming diabetic.
According to an Indian Express report, this special wheat variety contains a significant amount of PW RS1, RS-resistant starch. Due to the presence of high amylose and resistant starch, glucose production during blood flow will be gradual. Consuming bread made from this wheat variety will not result in a rapid increase in glucose levels. Additionally, its slow digestion will provide a feeling of satiety. Therefore, an individual who previously consumed four chapatis made from regular wheat will now feel satisfied by consuming only two chapatis made from this special wheat variety. Achla Sharma, the principal wheat breeder at the university, explained that the atta (flour) made from this specially developed wheat variety also has a lower glycemic index. This is attributed to its lower starch digestibility. As a result, it can aid in reducing the spread of various dietary-related diseases, including obesity and diabetes.
