Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have long faced challenges due to the low yield of the CO-238 sugarcane variety. However, there is good news for them! Agricultural scientists have developed two new sugarcane varieties – 'Lahiri' (Co. Sha. 19231) and Co. Se. 17451 – that promise higher yield and improved sugar recovery. These varieties also feature better disease resistance and faster growth, which could significantly boost farmers' income. The Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Development Department has advised farmers to adopt these new varieties to enhance sugarcane production and profitability in the state.

New Sugarcane Varieties to Boost Farmers' Earnings:

As spring sugarcane planting begins in Uttar Pradesh, the U.P. Seed Sugarcane and Sugarcane Variety Approval Sub-Committee held a meeting on February 11, 2025, to approve these new varieties for farmers. According to the Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Council, Shahjahanpur, both varieties have outperformed older ones in terms of yield and sugar recovery in different regions.

‘Lahiri’ Variety for Higher Yield:

The Co. Sha. 19231 variety, named 'Lahiri', has been developed by the U.P. Sugarcane Research Council, Shahjahanpur and is one of the highest-yielding varieties Average yield: 92.05 tons per hectare, Sugar content in juice (January): 17.85%, Sugar recovery rate: 13.20%

Similarly, another newly developed variety, Co. Se. 17451, created at the Seorahi Institute, also falls under the high-yield category: Average yield: 87.96 tons per hectare, Sugar content in juice (January): 16.63%, Sugar recovery rate: 12.82%

Which Variety is Suitable for Which Region?

Co. Sha. 19231 (‘Lahiri’) Suitable for all regions of Uttar Pradesh. Co. Se. 17451: Specifically recommended for Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Key Features of the New Varieties: Lahiri (Co. Sha. 19231): Has fine pores and light hair-like fibers, producing high-quality sugarcane. It shows moderate resistance to red rot disease, minimizing losses for farmers. Co. Se. 17451: Characterized by medium thickness and solid structure, with a long cylindrical shape that ensures higher yields.

Major Benefits of These New Varieties:

  1. Higher Yield: Outperforms CO-238 in production capacity.
  2. Better Sugar Recovery: Produces more sugar, benefiting sugar mills.
  3. Disease Resistance: Especially resistant to red rot disease, ensuring stable production.
