Retail prices of tomatoes have declined due to better supply at the mandis. As of November 14, 2024, the all-India average retail price of tomatoes was ₹52.35 per kg, which is 22.4% lower than ₹67.50 per kg on October 14, 2024. During the same period, the modal price of tomatoes at Azadpur mandi in Delhi dropped by nearly 50%, from ₹5,883 per quintal to ₹2,969 per quintal, owing to an increase in tomato arrivals. Similar price drops have been observed in major mandis such as Pimpalgaon, Madanapalle, and Kolar.
According to the third advance estimate by the Ministry of Agriculture, the total annual tomato production in 2023-24 is expected to be 213.20 lakh tonnes, a 4% increase compared to 204.25 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. While tomatoes are produced year-round in India, there are seasonal fluctuations in both the regions of production and the volume. The price surge in October 2024 was primarily caused by excessive and prolonged rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which disrupted supply.
The general seasonal period for tomato production in India is during October and November. However, due to the short crop cycle and multiple fruit pickings, tomatoes are continuously available in the market. Even though arrivals at major tomato centers like Madanapalle and Kolar have decreased, seasonal crops from states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat have filled the supply gaps at the national level. Currently, the weather is favorable for tomato crops, and it is helping maintain a smooth flow across the supply chain from farms to consumers.
The decline in tomato prices continues due to better supply and favorable weather conditions, providing relief to consumers. Efforts by the government and market supply centers have ensured that tomato availability remains stable, and prices are kept under control.
