Patna, Bihar: Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, presented a comprehensive plan to double farmers' income during a discussion with farmers in Patna. Recognizing agriculture as the backbone of the Indian economy, Shri Chouhan expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving the farming community, which he views as a divine duty. He reiterated the government's commitment to farmers' welfare, highlighting Prime Minister Modi's pledge to work three times faster towards this goal. Shri Chouhan also commended the Bihar government, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and the Agriculture Department, for their unwavering dedication to farmers' welfare.
Shri Chouhan lauded the exceptional work of Bihar's farmers, particularly in cultivating crops like makhana, rice, honey, maize, and tea, despite the challenge of small landholdings, 91% of which are managed by marginal farmers.
To achieve the goal of doubling farmers income, Shri Chouhan outlined six key strategies:
- Boosting Agricultural Production: The first strategy focuses on enhancing agricultural production using high-quality seeds. Shri Chouhan highlighted the development of 109 new varieties across 65 different crops, such as a rice variety that consumes 30% less water and millet that reaches maturity in only 70 days. These climate-resilient seeds are designed to maintain high yields even in rising temperatures. Shri Chouhan assured that he would coordinate with ICAR to ensure these seeds are accessible to Bihar's farmers.
- Reducing Production Costs: The second strategy emphasizes reducing production costs, supported by initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and affordable loans for fertilizers through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC).
- Ensuring Fair Prices for Produce: The third strategy aims to secure fair prices for agricultural produce. Shri Chouhan highlighted the success of Bihar's makhana, which has achieved export quality status, offering better returns for farmers. He committed to establishing a dedicated office in Bihar for this purpose.
- Promoting Agricultural Diversification: The fourth strategy involves promoting agricultural diversification, encouraging the cultivation of high-value crops alongside traditional ones. Shri Chouhan also emphasized the importance of food processing, recognizing Bihar's immense talent and potential to lead not only India but the world in this field.
- Transitioning to Sustainable Farming Practices: The fifth strategy focuses on shifting towards sustainable farming practices. Shri Chouhan expressed concern over the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, which reduce soil fertility and pose health risks. He advocated for a mission of natural farming, led by the Prime Minister, aimed at increasing production while preserving soil health.
- Addressing Practical Challenges: The final strategy involves addressing practical challenges faced by farmers. Shri Chouhan announced plans to conduct future programs directly in farmers' fields, where he will work to solve real-world problems and reinforce the essential role of farmers in maintaining the world's food supply.
Conclusion: Shri Chouhan reaffirmed the government's commitment to working closely with farmers to secure their prosperity and ensure the success of India's agriculture.
