Uttar Pradesh is set to attract an investment of ₹1.5 trillion in the energy sector over the next 4 to 5 years, as the state's peak energy demand is projected to exceed 53,000 megawatts (MW) by 2028. This anticipated investment will encompass the entire value chain of energy projects, including generation, transmission, and distribution, incorporating both conventional and renewable energy sources.
Sunil Singhvi, President of the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), emphasized that the energy sector will play a pivotal role in achieving Uttar Pradesh's goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy.
Public sector investment in the state's energy sector is expected to reach ₹90,000 crore, with private sector contributions driving the total investment to nearly ₹1.5 trillion. In 2024, Uttar Pradesh's peak power demand surpassed the 30,000 MW mark, fueled by industrialization, urbanization, and the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the state.
Uttar Pradesh aims to generate approximately 22,000 MW of solar energy by 2027-28. The state is also ramping up thermal power generation to meet the increasing demand from various sectors, including industry, commerce, residential, and agriculture. To facilitate this, Uttar Pradesh is offering various incentives and benefits to private sector companies for establishing power projects and manufacturing plants. The state's total power consumption is projected to grow at an annual rate of 16%, reaching around 277,000 million units (MU) by 2028.
The western region of Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience higher industrial power consumption compared to other areas, with estimates suggesting it will account for 62% of the state's energy usage due to the concentration of industries and commercial establishments. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has previously directed energy department officials to expedite various power projects in the state. Meanwhile, IEEMA has announced plans to host the world’s largest electrical show, 'Elecrama 2025,' from February 22 to 26 next year in Greater Noida, aimed at stimulating the domestic energy value chain.
Empowering Women through Innovations in the Energy Sector: Charu Mathur, Director General of IEEMA, stated that leading electrical manufacturers and power companies from around the world will participate in this mega event, which seeks to bolster the Indian manufacturing industry. Currently, electrical equipment exports from India are estimated to be around $12 billion. IEEMA is also focusing on promoting startups in the energy sector and empowering women business leaders within the industry.
