In the whole of India, Vat Savitri Vrat holds special significance in Hinduism. According to the Hindu calendar, married women observe Vat Savitri Vrat on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Jyeshtha month to pray for the longevity of their husbands. During this fast, the banyan tree (Vat) holds immense importance, and worship of the banyan tree is also conducted. This year, Vat Savitri Vrat will be observed on June 6, 2024, falling on a Thursday. Here is the procedure for performing the Vat Savitri Vrat puja:

Procedure for Vat Savitri Vrat Puja:

On the day of Vat Savitri Vrat, married women wake up early in the morning and bathe. Following this, they dress in clean attire and embellish themselves with sixteen ornaments. All the puja items should be kept in a wooden or bamboo basket, as it is considered auspicious. Commence the puja at home, then offer prayers to the Sun god with red flowers and a copper vessel. Place idols or images of Savitri-Satyavan and Yamaraj under the banyan tree. Offer water to the banyan tree and adorn it with flowers, rice grains, fruits, and sweets. Perform 108 circumambulations around the tree while tying a protective or raw thread around its trunk, praying for blessings. Subsequently, listen to the story associated with this vrat. Conclude by offering donations to Brahmins and distributing Prasad to everyone.

Materials required for Vat Savitri Vrat Puja: The puja requires materials such as photos of Savitri-Satyavan, incense, lamps, ghee, bamboo fan, red sacred thread, all items related to the husband's well-being, raw thread, banyan fruit, copper vessel, and a decorated plate.

Significance of the Banyan Tree: In Vat Savitri Vrat, the worship of the banyan tree is performed. It is believed that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva reside in this tree. Lord Vishnu resides in its trunk, Brahma in its roots, and Shiva in its branches. Due to its longevity, it is also known as Akshayavat, symbolizing eternal life. This is why the banyan tree holds special importance in Indian culture.

Auspicious Timings: Vat Savitri Vrat will be observed on June 6, 2024. According to the Hindu Panchang, the new moon (Amavasya) will begin on June 5 at 7:55 PM and will end on June 6 at 6:07 PM.

Why is Vat Savitri Puja Performed: Performing puja on the day of Vat Savitri Vrat holds great significance. According to the tale of Vat Amavasya, Savitri, the daughter of King Ashwapati, chose Satyavan as her husband. Satyavan used to go to the forest to cut wood. One day, while cutting wood, Satyavan fell from a tree, and at that moment, Yamaraj came to take his life. Savitri followed Yamaraj and did not return. Impressed by Savitri's devotion, Yamaraj granted Satyavan's life back and blessed Savitri with the boon of having 100 sons. According to religious beliefs, on this day, the banyan tree is worshipped as Amavasya.
